Christel’s work is inspired by stories. Behind every abstract composition lies a memory, an impression from a distant journey, an encounter with a landscape, or a moment of unexpected beauty close to home. She does not translate these experiences literally, but allows them to resonate through colour, texture and movement.
Layer by layer, she builds up her paintings until the story has unfolded. She works primarily with acrylic paint, applied using palette knives and recycled materials. This method creates a layered surface where depth, light and rough textures come together. The result is colourful, abstract-expressionist works that invite personal interpretation.
“For me, a painting is never a closed story. When a work leaves the studio, a new dialogue begins with the viewer. I hope that my paintings create space for wonder, memory and imagination, so that everyone can discover their own meaning in them.”
After living and working in the Netherlands for forty years, Christel has returned to Belgium. This transition marks a new phase in her artistic practice, in which she is experimenting with smaller formats and new materials, whilst her fascination with colour, layering and the human imagination remains central.
